Since 1984, the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center (MIWRC) has provided assistance to Native American women and their families in the areas of social and mental health. MIWRC’s objective is to enable Native American women and their families to advocate for Native values and traditions in a responsible way, build sustainable communities, and fight for justice and equality for everyone.

MIWRC, which has its headquarters in Minneapolis’s Phillips neighborhood, has established a vast array of programs to enhance the quality of life for Native American women and their children. Their services include family assistance, affordable housing, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, mental health treatment, cultural renewal, and other social services. MIWRC is committed to preserving culturally sensitive practices, such as respecting a woman’s connections to nature, her family, her community, and their traditions.

MIWRC can assist victims of sexual assault, domestic abuse, and human trafficking. Native American women, girls, and Two Spirit people have access to a domestic violence intervention and rehabilitation program. In both the Hennepin County Adult Detention Facility and the Federal Correctional Institution, inmates have access to services such as crisis counseling, psychotherapy, assistance with forensics testing, and legal representation.

In collaboration with other organizations, MIWRC has established a street outreach program to serve persons who are presently facing homelessness. On Mondays, adolescents and young adults who have been victims of sexual assault, exploitation, or trafficking have access to a Power Circle. Under the direction of a Safe Harbor Case Manager and Youth Outreach Specialist, participants will participate in collaborative brainstorming, the development of skills, and creative expression.

MIWRC has launched family-oriented projects, such as the Family Stabilization program, which provides parenting and life skills training, reunion and preventive programs, secure and affordable housing, and mental health counseling to help families restore their footing. Along with them, Hennepin County offers the Life Skills Parenting Program and the Family Support Program in an effort to improve the lives of Native American families.

Native American families referred to Child Protection in Minnesota under the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) Partnership are provided with advocacy assistance and thorough case monitoring by MIWRC. Also, in cooperation with the Division of Indian Work, they provide Family Spirit, the largest and only evidence-based early childhood home visiting program for American Indian people.

Lastly, MIWRC offers the fast re-housing program to quickly re-house homeless family members while providing the necessary assistance to ensure a seamless transition. Participants will have access to case management, resources, and services aimed to assist them discover and secure a permanent housing as fast as possible throughout their stay in the program. MIWRC is committed to providing individualized programs and assistance regardless of the recipient’s employment status, financial standing, absence of a criminal record, or sobriety.
