Pillion Trust is an organization that provides a safe refuge for troubled and at-risk youth through its Crash Pad Shelter program. The shelter is open to young people (18-23) and runs from November to May, with year-round daily activities.
The Crash Pad Shelter provides a family-focused, friendly setting where youth can unwind and feel safe. They are provided with a place to sleep, clean linens, tasty meals, baths, and a sympathetic ear throughout the night. The program also provides a sense of security and predictability as the youth ponder their futures.
Referrals are accepted from all London statutory youth agencies, youth charities, legal charities, the general public, and young people themselves. Since the Shelter’s opening in 2010, more than 1,417 youth have passed through its doors. The program is designed for youth who are aging out of the care system, experiencing a family crisis, getting pregnant, leaving a relationship, living on the streets, or residing in temporary accommodation.
Apart from providing a safe haven, the team at Crash Pad Shelter also educates and trains children on themes such as budgeting, financial planning, renter’s rights, and tenancy law. They offer lectures on keeping warm and safe for as low as £57.90. The program also includes workshops on personal cleanliness, healthy eating, cooking, housekeeping, and culinary classes seven days a week.
Crash Pad Shelter also provides courses in the visual arts, including painting, drawing, sculpting, photography, carving, ceramic sculpture, and graphic design. Additionally, they offer weekly classes in creative writing and woodwork. All young adults moving into independent living are given a “Gift in a Bag,” including essential home supplies such as clean sheets, a duvet cover, pillow covers, towels, a 13-tog blanket, a coat, a set of dishes and cutlery, etc.
The program also offers regular exercise activities such as mixed martial arts (MMA), the gym, Myai Thai, football, and table tennis, among others. And finally, the youth are exposed to a range of recreational activities such as theatrical performances, operas, movies, amusement parks, the Oxford Street Christmas lights, Winter Wonder World, ice skating, beach day trips, and swimming.
Pillion Trust’s Crash Pad Shelter program offers a comprehensive approach to helping at-risk youth. The program provides a safe haven, education, life skills training, and recreational activities to help the youth develop the skills they need to live independently and thrive in society.
