Ballycastle Foodbank

Since 2014, the Ballycastle Foodbank has served the Northern Ireland community. The foodbank has provided 780 three-day emergency food supplies to crisis-stricken individuals and families in the past year.

Ballycastle Foodbank was founded as a cooperative effort by three Ballycastle congregations under the auspices of Ballycastle Church Action. In 2016, the foodbank became affiliated with Trussell Trust, a UK-based organization dedicated to ending starvation and destitution.

The foodbank accepts referrals from professionals, such as physicians, health visitors, social workers, and police officers, who identify individuals and families in need of food. The food bank utilizes a voucher system to ensure that food is distributed to those in greatest need.

Schools, churches, businesses, and individuals donate nonperishable, in-date food to the foodbank, which is then sorted by volunteers to ensure it is appropriate for distribution. Additionally, volunteers pack the food into cartons for distribution.

The fact that Ballycastle Foodbank offers delivery of food supplies every day of the week is one of its distinguishing characteristics. This allows individuals and families who are unable to acquire their supplies in person to still receive the necessary assistance. Working days and hours include Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

Local churches and community organizations help raise awareness of the Ballycastle Foodbank and provide volunteers to assist with sorting and packaging food supplies.
