Glasgow Women’s Aid (GWA) is an organization that has been providing assistance and a safe haven for women, children, and young people who are experiencing domestic abuse and violence at home since 1973. The organization has expanded its focus from just women to include children and young people. GWA offers various services, including refuge accommodations, follow-up assistance, and outreach programs.
GWA provides refuge accommodations that offer a secure and supportive environment for women and children who are fleeing domestic abuse. They offer 46 shelter places, including self-contained apartments that can house both small families and single women. Two flats are specially constructed to cater to individuals with sensory, physical, and/or visual impairments. Shared housing is made up of apartments that are shared, and satellite apartments are located in neighborhood areas but lack on-site offices. The accommodation is furnished to a high standard, and women and children only need to bring their clothing and personal items.
The organization assigns a Family Resource Worker to each woman seeking refuge to provide emotional and practical assistance. The workers create personalized support plans to ensure that all the women’s needs are met, and the assistance is centered on the woman’s requirements. GWA has in-house gatherings where all the women in the refuge can come together. The organization also offers one-on-one counseling sessions, where women receive support and guidance on various topics such as securing long-term housing, eligibility for benefits, financial counseling, parental concerns, legal counsel, and health and wellbeing.
GWA’s follow-up assistance helps women settle into their new homes after leaving the refuge. Women are assigned a support worker who helps them update their addresses with relevant organizations, apply for furniture and white goods via the Scottish Welfare Fund, and investigate resources available to them in their new town. Follow-on employees may also help women locate courses that boost their self-esteem and confidence. The organization’s ultimate goal is to ease women’s transition from the shelter to their new home.
GWA’s outreach program provides assistance to women who don’t need to seek shelter. The program is provided in local communities in safe, neutral locations, online, and over the phone. Women who are facing domestic abuse and violence can receive help and support through this program.
In conclusion, Glasgow Women’s Aid has been providing crucial support and a safe haven for women, children, and young people experiencing domestic abuse and violence. The organization offers various services, including refuge accommodations, follow-up assistance, and outreach programs, to ensure that women can rebuild their lives and regain control.
