United Way of King County

Description

United Way of King County

The United Way of King County is a 101-year-old organization that has been dedicated to ensuring safe housing, sufficient educational opportunities, and enough earnings for all county residents. In recent years, the organization has shifted its focus towards achieving racial justice by overhauling inequitable grantmaking, fundraising, and service delivery practices. The organization recognizes that dismantling racist mechanisms is the only way to create the society we want and is committed to returning power and resources to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities.

One of the pressing issues that the organization is currently tackling is homelessness. Chronic homelessness and long-term family homelessness have increased, and the majority of the affected population consists of people of color, including Black Americans and Indigenous peoples. To tackle the root causes of homelessness, the organization prioritizes and finances collaborations with organizations and service providers that aim to eradicate racial disparities and equity gaps in their assistance for homeless individuals.

Another area of focus for the organization is education. The organization believes that students should not be evaluated based on their family’s wealth, where they reside, or the color of their skin, and is investing in their success because education is a family’s best protection against and exit from poverty. United Way assists Seattle-area kids in overcoming barriers to education and employment. In King County, people of color are disproportionately impacted by poverty, and the organization finances programs and organizations that cater to the needs of communities of color, expand outreach to those populations, and reduce barriers to getting assistance.

In conclusion, the United Way of King County is an organization that is committed to ensuring that all county residents have access to safe housing, sufficient educational opportunities, and enough earnings. The organization is dedicated to achieving racial justice by overhauling inequitable grantmaking, fundraising, and service delivery practices and returning power and resources to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. By focusing on issues such as homelessness and education, the organization is making a significant impact on the lives of those in need in the Seattle area.
