AWAIC – Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis

Help Line Crisis & Support 24\7 – (907) 272-0100

A non-profit organisation in Alaska called Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis (AWAIC) offers safe housing, intervention, and preventative programmes to those who have experienced domestic abuse. The key principles of the organisation are advocacy, compassion, respect for others, and teamwork. The biggest safe haven in Alaska for victims of domestic abuse, AWAIC provides a variety of services to assist victims in getting back on their feet and making the transition to safe, independent life.

AWAIC was established in 1976 by a group of tenacious Anchorage women, and it opened its doors as a safe house for women and their kids in August 1977. At first, the shelter offered simply a brief, emergency haven where survivors could flee violence and have some time to think about their choices moving forward. AWAIC established its 52-bed shelter building in January 1983, housing women and children while the male survivors were kept in motels off-site.

AWAIC completed the Safe Spaces Extension and Remodeling project in January 2021. In order to ensure that male survivors could receive the same services as survivors who identified as women, this initiative extended the shelter’s bed capacity to 67 and established space on-site for male survivors and their children. Since additional locations for case managers to interact with survivors who are not residing in the shelter were made available by the Expansion and Renovation project, AWAIC now has more opportunity to help more individuals and families.

AWAIC provides survivors of domestic abuse with essential ongoing help, including advocacy, counselling, case management, and support groups. The company also offers transportation services, training for job preparedness, and legal aid. The group provides community training and education on the dynamics of domestic abuse as well as how to spot and handle it.
