The New York Common Pantry (NYCP)

Description

The New York Common Pantry (NYCP) is a nonprofit organization that alleviates hunger and promotes dignity and self-sufficiency in New York City. Founded in 1980, NYCP provides services to needy individuals and families, including emergency food distribution, social services, and education and training programs.

Some NYCP’s services and programs that you should know:

  • Food Program: This program provides monthly free, nutritious groceries to over 3,000 families. In addition to offering healthy food options, the pantry provides resources and support to help families improve their overall health and well-being. This includes access to nutrition education, cooking classes, and referrals to other social services such as healthcare and housing assistance.
  • Nourish: To promote the welfare of those 60 or older with low incomes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture offers Nourish as part of the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). NYCP is on the list of 3 agencies contracted to run this program statewide.
  • Live Healthy: With an emphasis on the SNAP-eligible population, the NYCP program provides direct nutrition education, policy system, and environment programs for underserved, high-need community members.
  • Help 365: The NYCP Social Services Department assists our visitors in obtaining stability and access to their legal entitlements 365 days a year through the Help 365 program.
  • Project Dignity: It offers homeless people case management and hygienic assistance. The program aims to act as a bridge for our hungry and homeless clients to return to health, well-being, and self-sufficiency.

NYCP’s services are not just about providing food or assistance but about empowering individuals and families to take control of their lives and create a better future for themselves and their communities.
