Second Harvest Food Bank – Santa Cruz County
Santa Cruz County has been served by the non-profit ‘Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz’ for nearly 50 years. Its mission is to encourage and assist the community in nourishing all of its members. Second Harvest provides nutritional assistance to those in Santa Cruz County who are struggling with starvation and food insecurity.
Each year, the organisation accumulates and distributes more than 11M pounds of food, the equivalent of 8.5 million meals. They collaborate with over 150 food pantries, charity kitchens, schools, youth centers, group homes, and Second Harvest programme sites to ensure that food reaches those in greatest need.
The nutrition assistance programme
CalFresh is a nutrition assistance programme that assists low-income individuals and families purchase nutritious food. A household’s eligibility for CalFresh is determined by its size and its gross income. Individuals over the age of 60 or with a disability may be eligible with higher total income limits.
Second Harvest conducts a Holiday Food & Fund Drive during the holiday season to ensure that no one goes famished during the holidays. The campaign encourages individuals to donate money or supplies to those in need. Third meals can be provided for every dollar donated to Second Harvest.
Second Harvest operates education and advocacy programmes to combat the fundamental causes of starvation and food insecurity in addition to providing food assistance. These programmes seek to promote nutrition education, culinary education, and health and wellness activities in order to assist individuals in making healthier dietary choices and living a more fulfilling life.
