The Newark Foodbank is a charitable organization that distributes food to low-income residents of Essex County and the greater Newark area. The Trussell Trust was key in the founding of the food bank, which began operations in 2013.
The Newark food bank is open on Tuesdays from 3 to 5 pm and Fridays from 1 to 3 pm, and its hours are designated for those who are in a difficult financial situation and are experiencing an emergency crisis. After verifying that a client is in need of food assistance, professionals such as physicians, health care workers, and social workers, as well as volunteers from organizations such as the Citizens Advice Bureau, will provide vouchers to the client.
Food banks, such as the Newark Foodbank, which is a part of a bigger network overseen by the Trussell Trust, are getting more and more requests for assistance from those in need. During the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the Trust distributed an extra 18% more three-day emergency food boxes to people in need, bringing the total number of boxes distributed to those in need to 1.9 million.
The Newark Foodbank could not continue its work without the support of donations. Donations of non-perishable food items can be made to the foodbank either at its physical location or at any of the numerous supermarkets located in the immediate area. The foodbank will also accept monetary donations, which are put toward the purchase of essential commodities by the organization.
In addition to providing clients with food for immediate consumption, the Newark Foodbank also offers clients emotional support and makes referrals to other available resources. Debt counseling, assistance with housing, and mental health care are a few examples of the types of support that fall under this category.
