Atherton & Leigh Foodbank

Atherton & Leigh Foodbank is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide sustenance to individuals in need. The foodbank was established in 2013 and is supported by Trussell Trust, a UK-based charity that funds a network of foodbanks.

The Atherton & Leigh Foodbank operates four foodbanks, one in Atherton, two in Leigh, and one in Platt Bridge. Each center is open for two hours per day, and those in need can obtain provisions from any of the centers during operating hours.

The foodbank relies on donations of nonperishable, in-date food from individuals, institutions, and congregations. Volunteers organize and bundle food into cartons, which are then distributed to those in need. The food bank ensures that the food is nutritionally balanced and takes any dietary restrictions into consideration.

The Atherton & Leigh Foodbank collaborates with professionals such as physicians, health visitors, social workers, and the police to identify individuals in need of emergency food. They issue a voucher redeemable at the food bank for a food package. Each person referred to the foodbank receives a minimum of three days’ worth of nutritionally balanced food.

Local churches and community groups provide financial donations, food donations, and volunteer support to the organization. They collaborate to ensure that the food bank operates effortlessly and efficiently.

In addition to providing emergency food supplies, the Atherton & Leigh Foodbank also provides assistance and referrals to other services and organizations that can assist with a variety of issues, including debt, housing, and welfare benefits.
