Blackwood & District Foodbank
The Blackwood & District Foodbank is a charitable organization that provides three days’ worth of food to those in need in the Blackwood region. Last year, the food bank gave 1,246 persons with food. From its creation in 2014, the Trussell Trust, a network of foodbanks across the United Kingdom, has been a sponsor of the organization.
Food is sorted and packaged by devoted volunteers to ensure that it is nutritionally sound and suitable for quick consumption in an emergency. Donations of perishable food are made by local companies, groups, and individuals. Before being distributed to individuals in need, volunteers sort donations by date, inspect them for spoilage, and pack them into boxes. Money donations are also collected and used to purchase diapers and sanitary products that are in great demand at the food bank.
Professionals, including doctors, health visitors, social workers, and police officers, identify persons in need before distributing vouchers redeemable for food packages at the foodbank. This ensures that those in most need get food and that no one is refused service.
In times of need, the Blackwood & District Foodbank provides much more than just food. The organization also offers signposting support to help folks locate the further services they may require. Assistance may be provided in the form of general debt management advice and connections to community organizations that may provide long-term support.
The food bank receives no government funding and depends exclusively on donations. It’s a lifeline for individuals in severe difficulties in Blackwood, providing them with food and comfort when they need it most. Staffed by dedicated volunteers, the foodbank continues to perform a vital function in the community.
