SCAN-Harbor, a non-profit organization, has been helping high-risk kids and families in Harlem, East Harlem, and the South Bronx since 1977. Lewis Zuchman has served as the organization’s executive director since 1987. SCAN-proactive Harbor’s strategy places an emphasis on maximizing human potential and encouraging accountability, self-worth, initiative, and life skills.

1. SCAN-Harbor provides high-risk children and families in the area with a vast array of integrated support services. Early childhood education, drug and alcohol treatment, violence prevention, literacy programs, performing arts, LGBTQ assistance, after-school activities and events, employment skills training, and youth leadership are just a few of the services offered.
2. SCAN-Harbor views service termination as a “beginning,” in contrast to conventional service providers that stop providing services once the presenting issue has been handled. Even when initial problems are resolved, the organization nevertheless offers clients ongoing help and direction.
3. The empowerment-focused service strategy utilized by SCAN-Harbor enables clients to build on their unique strengths and promote responsibility, self-esteem, initiative, and the acquisition of life skills. Clients of SCAN-Harbor have been motivated to achieve worthwhile goals by this strategy.

4. SCAN-Harbor is dedicated to assembling a multicultural team that reflects the communities it serves. Over 100 full-time and 300 part-time staff members work for the company, including community members who have benefited from services or are the parents of children who are presently receiving them.
